Journey to the Past
Aga Cafer Pasha Mosque History
In 1571, the Ottomans took the island of Cyprus from the Venetians. The Ottoman administration, which wanted to appoint an administrator in order to strengthen its dominance on the island, deemed Ağa Cafer Pasha suitable for this job. Although the exact date of the Aga Cafer Pasha Mosque is unknown, it is one of the first buildings raised by Cafer Pasha in Cyprus.
Unlike many other churches-turned-mosques you may encounter on the island, this building was designed as a mosque. Although some people claim that the building is a Lusignan structure, the mosque’s conformity to traditional Ottoman architecture and the history of the stones refute these theses. Apart from this mosque, Aga Cafer Pasha is also known to have built many other buildings in Famagusta.
To the southeast of the mosque is Hasan Kavizade Hüseyin Efendi Fountain, another important work of the period.
