Journey to the Past
History of Apostolos Andreas Monastery
The history of Apostolos Andreas Monastery dates back to the 12th century. The monastery was first built as a small chapel. In the 15th century, a larger structure was created and turned into a monastery. In the following centuries, the structure continued to grow and was restored and has survived to this day. Today, this holy place is considered one of the most important centers of the Christian faith.
The monastery, identified with St. Andrew, was built in the place where he performed one of his miracles. During his journey to the Holy Land, St. Andrew experienced a water shortage on his ship. The ship was able to reach the rocky area where the church stands today, and Andreas struck the rocks with his staff, miraculously causing water to gush out. The water gushing out of the rocks not only quenched the thirst of the crew but also cured the blindness of the ship’s captain who washed his eyes with the water.
Today, the water spring unearthed by St. Adreas is still flowing. The water that flows from here and is considered holy is drunk by the visitors of the monastery.
