Palace Details
What’s in Vouni Palace?
The palace is a large complex consisting of 137 rooms and built on three terraces. The first construction of the palace dates back to the Persian period and was built by the pro-Persian king of the city of Marion to spy on the city of Soli. It is thought that this place, which was built very close to the ancient city of Soli, Marion’s rival, was built with the support of the powerful Persian empire. It is also claimed that the traces of Eastern civilization seen in the architecture emerged due to this support.
The palace complex consists of three terraces.
First Terrace (Upper Terrace): This terrace, located at the top level, contains the remains of the Temple of Athena. The temple has a rectangular plan with a courtyard and altars in front of it. Second Terrace (Middle Terrace): On this terrace, where the main parts of the palace are located, there are administrative rooms, bedrooms, storerooms and baths. There is a large cistern in the center of the courtyard and this cistern was used to meet the water needs of the palace. Third Terrace (Lower Terrace): On this terrace extending towards the sea, there are buildings where the people lived. The houses with stone foundations and mudbrick superstructures offer clues about the daily life of the palace. The architectural features of Vouni Palace bear the traces of both Eastern and Western cultures. The palace, which was built in the eastern architecture during the Persian rule, later underwent some architectural changes during the Greek rule. The water system and baths of the palace reflect the advanced engineering techniques of the period.
