Journey to the Past
About Acendu Fountain
The Acendu Fountain is known to have been built between 450 and 550 years ago when Cyprus was under Venetian rule. The fountain offers a stream that runs between Lefke Creek and the slopes of Mount Lağuna for public use. Since there was no such water source in the city at that time, this fountain is very valuable for the people of the region.
It is rumored that the name of the fountain comes from Cento, the Venetian commander of the period. The water was called “Aqua de Cento” in the local language, meaning “Cento’s Water”, and over time, this expression began to be pronounced as “Acendu” among the locals. Until 1963, the fountain continued to flow until 1963, after which it dried up and flowed only in times of abundant rainfall. By 1974, the water from the fountain stopped flowing completely and today it is just a road with water flowing through it only when it rains.
