Journey to the Past
History of the Basilica of Ayios Trias
The Basilica of Ayios Trias, built in the 5th century AD, is a relic of the early Byzantine period. It has different structures decorated with many religious motifs. The basilica, whose name means “Holy Trinity” in Greek, is a beautiful example of Christian architecture and art of the period. During the Arab raids that began in the 7th century AD, the basilica was destroyed and later abandoned.
The surviving ruins include floor mosaics, stone columns and a nearby church.
The basilica is especially famous for the colorful mosaics decorating its floor. The patterns created with stone and glass pieces used in the mosaics are the works of the high artisans of the period. The motifs used in the mosaics mostly consist of symmetrical geometric shapes. It can also be seen that the motifs resemble the shape of a cross.
