Journey to the Past

History of Chrysopolitissa Church

Chrysopolitissa literally means “Golden City”. Although the exact date of the construction of the church is unknown, it is estimated that it was built in the 14th century. The building, which can be seen to be a Latin church, has several prominent elements.

The crucifixion of the prophet Jesus is depicted right next to the entrance. It is not known by whom and when this faintly visible work was painted. Another important element is the arched Gothic doorway, which was probably the original entrance to the church, but is now closed.

The historic Chrysopolitissa Church is one of the dozens of representatives of Gothic architecture in Cyprus. This architectural trend has manifested itself in many parts of the island starting from the 12th century.
