Journey to the Past
History of the Greco-Roman Rock Tombs
During these periods, tombs were built in the form of rooms. These ruins, which you can see near Kyrenia Castle, are in the form of rooms in accordance with the traditions of that period. Although there are usually items, paintings and sarcophagi in such tombs, only the stone structures that form the burial chambers have survived from the rock tombs in Kyrenia.
It is foreseen that there are much more grave remains in the west direction from the visible rooms. Moreover, it is also speculated that there are tunnels that allow you to travel between these tombs. However, this historical cemetery is located under today’s Kyrenia harbor area. Therefore, it is not possible to uncover it without demolishing many buildings and structures.
