Journey to the Past
History of Kantara Castle
Although the history of Kantara Castle is not certain, it is thought to date back to the Byzantine period. It is an accepted opinion that the castle was first built against Arab raids, even though it is not mentioned in written records. The name of the castle was first mentioned in written records in 1191 during the conquest of Cyprus by the English King Richard the Lionhearted.
In the 13th century, Kantara Castle, which increased in importance during the Lusignan period, was strengthened with fortifications by King James I of Cyprus in 1391. The castle, which maintained its strategic importance during the Venetian period, played an important role in the defense of the island.
However, they changed their war tactics over time. For this reason, Kantara Castle lost its importance and was abandoned in the 16th century. The castle, which turned into ruins as the centuries passed, was restored in 1914 and became what it is today.
