Journey to the Past

Karaoglanoglu Martyrdom and History

Prior to 1974, many events threatened the existence of the Turkish community on the island. When the Enosis-oriented coup attempt, which was supported by a part of the Greek Cypriot community, took place, the Turkish Armed Forces exercised its right of guarantor and intervened militarily in the island. Many heroic Turkish soldiers were martyred in this operation, which the Turkish Cypriots supported with their blood, lives and property.

This martyrdom in Kyrenia is the resting place of 71 heroic soldiers. Named after Colonel Halil İbrahim Karaoğlanoğlu, one of the landing officers, there is a museum, representative monuments and gravesites.

The museum also contains inscriptions and visuals that tell the story of the conflicts. There are also English-speaking soldiers on duty to assist foreign tourists visiting the museum.
