Journey to the Past

History of Lefke Aqueducts

Lefke Aqueducts were built in the 15th and 16th centuries and bear the architectural characteristics of the Ottoman and Venetian periods. For this reason, it is assumed that almost all of them were built during these periods. The aqueducts were built to convey water from the Troodos Mountains to the city of Lefke and the fertile fields around it. The aqueducts played an important role especially in the irrigation of citrus groves and grain fields.

The stone carvings on the arches are internationally acclaimed. Even the famous British explorer Samuel W. Baker praised the stonework of the arches in his book “Cyprus as I saw it”, in which he described his visit to Cyprus. Even the praise of the arches in this book, which is generally full of criticisms about the Cypriot life of the period, proves their beauty.
