Journey to the Past
History of the Round Tower
The Round Tower, Kyrenia’s standing guard for centuries, was first built in the early 14th century. Until the construction of the tower, Kyrenia Castle was successful in protecting the island from invaders for centuries. However, the increasing activities of Arab military forces and pirates necessitated the construction of the tower. Built by the Lusignans with Byzantine stones found on the island, the tower remained important until the Ottoman rule. After the Ottoman Empire took over the island and the Eastern Mediterranean, the waters were in the hands of a single power and there was no need for castle defense. For this reason, the tower was abandoned to its fate in the following years. In 1987, the tower underwent a modern restoration process and today it is a historical visit point. There is also a store selling souvenirs inside the tower.
