History of Soli Ancient City

The foundation of Soli dates back to the 6th century BC. According to legend, it was named after the famous Athenian legislator Solon. During the Roman and Byzantine periods, the city became an important port and trade center and lived its golden age. During the Christian era, Soli became a bishopric center and played an important role in the religious and cultural life of the region. In the 7th century, as a result of Arab raids and natural disasters, Soli turned into ruins and was forgotten over time.

There are many structures waiting to take you on a historical journey in the ancient city. The most important of these are the following:

Soli Basilica

The ancient city of Soli is remembered for its ruins, each with a different story. One of the most remarkable structures of the city is the Basilica of Soli. Dazzling with its columns, mosaics and baptistery, this building is one of the most beautiful examples of Byzantine architecture.

Agora

Located in the center of the city, the Agora was the center of the vibrant social life of antiquity. Here are the ruins of the place where market vendors once set up their stalls, where people gathered and chatted and where trade was intense.

Theater

Another important structure of Soli Ancient City is the theater. The theater, which hosted various shows in ancient times, is still standing today.

Baths

The Roman baths are one of the most important parts of Soli’s culture of the period. The different sections of the baths, hot and cold water pools, massage rooms and resting areas allow us to visualize this place, which was the center of the social life of that period.

Necropolis

The necropolis area of the ancient city is a section that sheds light on the dark side of the past. The sarcophagi and burial chambers offer the opportunity to observe the beliefs and traditions of the people of Soli regarding death.

It is possible to go to Soli Ancient City from Nicosia or Kyrenia by public transportation and private vehicles. Buses departing from Nicosia regularly run to Soli Ancient City. Taxi or car rental options are also available.

Visit Information

Soli Ancient City Visiting Hours and Entrance Fees

Salamis Ancient City is open to visitors between 08:00 – 16:00 on weekdays. The entrance fee is 50 TL for adults and 20 TL for students. However, entrance is free for young children.
