Journey to the Past

History of the Tomb of Omar

Based on the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad, “The first warriors from my Ummah who have made war at sea deserve to enter paradise.”, a navy was established near Syria in 647. This navy organized its first expedition to Cyprus. Hz. Ömer, whose tomb is located in Cyprus, assumed the command of this navy. Hz. Ömer, who was also a Companion, landed in Cyprus from where the tomb is located today. Hz. Omar and his men fought with Byzantine forces here. Omar and six of his men were martyred here and were hidden in a nearby cave by Islamic forces before retreating. According to stories, when Ottoman forces conquered the island in 1571, they found the bodies in the cave intact. The bodies were moved from the cave to where the tomb stands today and a mosque was built. Today, a wonderful place has been built here for both adults and children. This historical mausoleum awaits you at the end of the seaside, where an ideal environment for a pleasant time is created with facilities such as a playground, basketball court, walking trails and cafe. The sound of the waves while sitting in the courtyard of the mosque will give you an unforgettable moment of peace.

Curiosities

Why is the Tomb of Prophet Omar in Cyprus?

The Tomb of Hz. Ömer in Cyprus is not the tomb of the third caliph Hz. Ömer. It is the tomb of the navy commander and Companion Hz. Ömer, who lived in the same period and organized a campaign to Cyprus. Since Hz. Omar was martyred here, his burial place is also here.
